Titre: Situation of red palm weevil Rhynchophorus ferragineus (Olivier) in Tangier
Auteur(s): Bouayad, A., ONSSA, Tanger (Maroc)
Date de publication: 2010
Résumé: The red palm weevil (RPW) is a very devastating pest of palm trees. It develops in a cryptic way (larvae are invisible). Very few symptoms can be seen, but once trees are emptied, they die suddenly. The pest attacks all parts of the Palm starting by the Crown and in the most serious cases, even colonizing the stip. Adults are powerful flyers and can fly up to 7 km, mainly during the daytime, at temperatures between 25 and 40 0 C. Lethal temperatures are 5 o C for larvae, -2 0 C for nymphs, and between 0 and 50 C for adults. The RPW was first detected in Tangier by the plant protection service on 12/17/2008, on two 80 years old Phoenix canariensis trees, in a house situated approximately 500 m away from the port. Several emergency measures were taken right away: Destruction and incineration of both infested Palms; Inspection and treatment of the aerial part of other Palm trees nearby Extension of the inspection activity within a 1000 m around the house. Other measures taken were: Enactment of a Gubernatorial decree, Enactment of a joint decree between the Ministry of agriculture and fishing, and the Ministry ofInterior On the other hand, it is important to note that the Red Palm Weevil control requires establishing an integrated management strategy that involves the following actions: - Delimitation of the infested zone and identification of a protection area; - Early detection of the infestation; - Application of curative and preventive control measures ; - Mass trapping; - Banning Palm trees movement from the infested area; and -Conducting trainings to rise awareness of the various stakeholders.
