Résumé: | Red palm weevil (RPW) Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier), a lethal pest of young palms is reported to infest 19 palm species world wide. Only recently RPW has been reported from the Maghreb region in North Africa where it poses a serious threat to date plantations. Estimates suggest that around 50 per cent of the date plantations (12 million palms) in the Maghreb region are in the susceptible age group of less than 20 years. Food baited pheromone traps have been widely used in surveillance programmes against RPW and to mass trap adult weevils. However early detection of infested palms is the key to the success of any RPW management programme coupled with preventive and curative insecticidal treatments. Ornamental palm shipments including that of date palm for landscaping purposes have aided in the spread of the pest, there by calling for a comprehensive quarantine protocol to be adopted that would either consider stopping such shipments or oversee movement of RP\\V free planting material. This paper gives an overview of the management options available against RPW and proposes a strategy to combat the pest in Morocco, besides suggesting topics of research relevant for controlling RPW in Morocco. |
